Early on the morning of August 22, 2010 in rural Port Colborne, Ontario, three masked men were captured on a surveillance camera, shouting death threats and attempting to set ablaze a farmhouse while the owner was trapped inside. Fearing for his life and the destruction of his property, owner Ian Thomson, a licensed gun safety instructor and firearm expert, fired several warning shots in the direction of his assailants with a legally owned .38 caliber revolver. The perpetrators, who were known to police, quickly fled the scene and only a while later faced criminal charges and imprisoned.
